Default Intercooled Twin Turbo Clubsport R8 317 6.2L LS3 - 466.6 rwkW on just 9.5psi boost!

Below are some details and pics of my new intercooled twin turbo HSV Clubsport R8 317 LS3. I wanted to keep the Clubby looking as factory as possible, and have achieved this with an APS “stealth” twin turbo system positioned under the car, electronic controllers hidden inside the glovebox, blow-off valve hidden in the air filter box and all plumbing etc hidden under the stock LS3 engine cover.

It’s a great car to drive on the street. Under 3,000 rpm it feels slightly stronger than stock, and returns an unbelievable 8l/100kms on cruise control in "street" tune. On boost, even with 285 rear rubber, traction becomes a huge problem. It just spun the tyres on the dyno in 4th gear when the boost was increased to 9.5 psi. We had to do the "power" tune dyno runs in 5th gear. 5th gear power was measured at 466.6 rwkW (625.8 rwhp)!

With great looks, brakes and handling, climate control, leather interior, 11 speaker stereo, good fuel economy, reliability and phenomenal power, I think my Clubby is close to being the ultimate street sedan!

Model: HSV Clubsport R8 317 LS3
Colour: Heron White
Engine Type: LS3 6.2 litre V8
Engine Mods: APS Intercooled Twin Turbo, GReddy boost controller, polished stainless steel plumbing, twin K&N cold air ram pods

Power tune (5th gear) - 466.6 rwkW (625.8 rwhp) 110 RON / 9.5psi boost 6/11/08
Top Speed: 300 kph + (250 kph limiter removed)
Economy: 8 litres per 100 kilometres (98 RON PULP) on cruise control in street tune

Very nice ride. Good work hiding the turbo kit, although I would have made
mine as visible as possible. But I suppose this way, you avoid attention.

Thanks guys.

I went the stealth route because I didn't want to draw the unwanted attention of Constable Plod if I ever get pulled over.

If it was a show car I may have gone down the in-your-face route, but basically its been built to be practical for the street.

My last ride was cammed and cubed and did 3 kilometres per litre just cruising. A bitch in traffic and hot as hell in summer. Great fun but not a good cruiser. I got both with the Clubby. Its a great cruiser (drives like a stocker under 3,000 rpm and is more economical), yet it can go animal when you want it to.

Folks don't realize just how sly modern turbos are. With no rice shit like turbo timers (liquid cooled), no cams, no loud exhaust, and no belt or gear whine to attract the law, it makes for a reliable stress free ride.

nice work.

300km/h varified??

be a nice weapon on the main straight of phillip island raceway.

BTW how long do the lambda sensors last with the RON110?

8 week build impressive also.
some people here in euro car land are taking like 4yrs to sort thier turbo setups.

Hi guys! I thought I'd post a pic of the engine bay with the engine cover off.

The LS3 cover is away being modified as it won't fit on the billet fuel rails. I want to maintain the stealth look.

This pic also shows the Tein electronic controllers on top of each shock. The damping force can be varied by 16 increments between full hard and full soft, on both back and front shocks, via the controller in the glovebox as pictured above.

Full soft gives better traction and ride, full hard is gr8 for the twisty bits. I've still got to experiment with other settings. I may have to wait for a track day.

I spoke to Dyno Dynamics about my traction problems and they said that low profile 20" tyres don't bite into the rollers like higher profile tyres. They also told me not to use my Drag Radials, but to put 40 psi in my street tyres and continue to run it in 5th. I've got it booked in at the end of October for another dyno session on 10 psi boost, and I'll see how it goes then.

Hi Chemicals! A standard Clubby will do 175mph (281 kph) when the speed limiter is removed. Both Jeremy Clarkson (Top Gear) and Vicki Butler-Henderson (5th Gear) have mentioned this during their testing. This is with a standard motor, so I think that another 19kph should be achievable with nearly twice the standard power. lol This is however only a theoretical discussion as I have no intention of trying it out.

The 110 fuel (Martini 1400) is unleaded and designed for these types of applications. My mechanic has been using it on his own turbo weapons over the years with no adverse effects. However, I'll ask him the question when I see him at the end of the month.

The turbo set up is actually an APS LS2 kit which took over 12 months of testing to refine for production and export to the US. It normally only takes a week to install and tune on an LS2. The APS LS2 kit in turn was based on the APS LS1 kit which has engineering certification to the ADR's. Not the cheapest, but a very mature, well sorted product - thats one of the reasons I went for it.

That is truly one amazing car mate - very nice work indeed.

May I ask (if you don't mind), how much did the X-Force dual 3”, full polished stainless steel in cross over design cost? Obviously came with the high flow cats?

Cheers and again - very tough HSV.

PhantomVE - Thanks for your comments. The X-Force Exhaust was modified to suit the twin turbo application. It cost $2,900 to supply and fit, but I don't know how much of that was labour related to turbo fitment which would not be necessary for a normal bolt on job. I also went for the top shelf cats. Pic of system as unwrapped before fitting is below. Suggest you Google X-Force and get a quote from a local exhaust shop. The quality is top shelf and nothing hits or rattles. Note is good but subdued. Sounds tough but will not attract the law or annoy neighbours.

Hey Joker - its good fun too! A couple of weeks ago I had this XR6 turbo come up and try to egg me on thinking that the Clubby was a stock V8. I could see his front mount IC and he kept letting his B/O valve go alongside me. Not wanting the cops to impound my ride, I didn't want to do anything, but then I got an opportunity and hit it with him behind me. Needless to say I pulled away from him like he was standing still, leaving black marks all the way. He stopped hassling me after that. I think he has a new respect for Holden V8's now.

We dynoed the Clubby again today on increased boost. This time we pumped the tyres right up and strapped it down big time. It still spun the wheels in 4th gear, but thankfully this time it maintained traction in 5th.

Spiro still could not get enough timing in because of the LS3's high compression, and I had to settle for a conservative tune at 9.5 psi boost. This still gave us 625.8 rwhp (466.6rwkW) in 5th gear and thats over 780 horsepower at the flywheel... from a totally standard, unopened motor with just bolt-ons.

Time to start saving again. I'm going to have to modify the bottom end if I want more power. That means a compression drop to 8.7:1 and bullet proof internals. That should then be safe for 15 psi boost and around 600rwkW.

savage car mate, 466rwkw seems like a lot of power for a standard engine on only 9.5psi, are you sure its not 9.5psi per turbo :P lol,
nice work mate would be a hand full to drive on WOT!!

I don't like the price of doing up the bottom end, when I can't really use the power I have on the street now anyway. So I'm going to shelve those plans until I'm forced to do it (knock on wood). Meanwhile, we are going to fiddle around a bit with the intake system and see if we can get some more capacity as the (kit) current system seems a bit restrictive. We'll do this over the next few months and we'll put a new Textralia clutch in at the same time. Then I'll take it down to WSID and see what difference these changes make. I'm not expecting wicked times as it is still a 4,123lb heavyweight after all!

On another note, we drove to the HSV plant in Melbourne and back last month and got overall trip fuel consumption (city & country) for the 2,000kms of better than 10 litres / 100kms with the air-con pumping

But good on ya, that wont get even the faintest whisp of plod enjoy and let us know what you decide to do
